Coaching & Solution-Focused Therapy Benefits

What is Coaching and Solution-Focused Therapy?

Solution-Focused Therapy and Coaching focuses on solutions instead of on problems. The psychotherapist and counsellor does this by helping their clients identify what’s bothering them.

For example, you may say, “I have trouble making friends.” I work collaboratively with you to set a goal. A goal might be, “I want to have a group of friends to hang out with.” I then help you identify a series of steps that can make this goal a reality. One step could be, “I want to introduce myself to three people this week.”

An essential part of this approach is helping the client identify what has and hasn’t worked in the past when dealing with a particular challenge. The psychotherapist and counsellor then encourages the client to do more of “what works” as he moves toward his goal.

Why Coaching and Solution-Focused Therapy Works

The personal benefits of Solution-Focused Therapy are wide-ranging and can positively impact an individual’s career if they are engaging with their psychotherapist and counsellor. This process can help develop individuals across a wide range of needs and can even benefit them on a personal level. Solution-Focused Therapy boosts confidence, improves work performance, and builds effective communication skills.

The great benefit of Solution-Focused Therapy is that you are very likely to see quick, positive results as an outcome. Solution-Focused Therapy is interactive and co-creative– which means you create your plan collaboratively with your psychotherapist and counsellor. People tend to learn and adopt new habits more easily when they are actively engaged in an open, caring, empathetic, and collaborative learning process.

The process is entirely devoted to you, your issues, and the attainment of your new goals. Solution-Focused Therapy will continuously challenge you in positive ways and encourage you to work on the issues you identify as needing improvement.

By continually improving, you practice effective habits. The more you practice, the more natural they become, and eventually, they become your new way of being.

How is this approach unique?

In traditional counselling, clients typically explore their past so they can better understand their present problems. Solution-Focused Therapy focuses on what’s happening now. It helps clients come up with solutions that can make life better in the future.

In Solution-Focused Therapy, clients work together with their counsellor instead of relying on the psychotherapist and counsellor as the expert. Solution-Focused Therapy is “focused” when compared to traditional long-term counselling. Research shows that Solution-Focused Therapy can bring positive results after an average of three to five sessions.
